What is Golden Gardens?
Golden Gardens Park is a natural area owned by the City of Eugene. The park is located in Bethel neighborhood of West Eugene. Located at the end of Golden Gardens Street (north of Barger), it connects via a walking and biking path that runs in front of the park through West Eugene Wetlands (Beltline path) and Terry Street on the west). A channel of Amazon Creek runs through the park and serves as a stormwater and otter (occasionally) conveyance path. Originally, the ponds were created to source gravel for building Beltline Road. After tragic drownings, the city began improving safety and habitat for the park. Read more here: https://www.eugene-or.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/68

Why do we need this group?
Like all public parks, Golden Gardens requires maintenance, stewardship and love from residents and frequent users of the landscape. City budgets are frequently not enough to handle all of the things needed to keep the habitats functioning for things like air quality improvement, water storage, cleanliness, and movement and to help reduce the heat island effect in otherwise paved environments. Though these may sound like human concerns only, natural environments like the park are space for life of all other forms — butterflies, bees, dragonflies, plants, fungi, birds and other animals. Keeping the habitat as native as possible benefits all these groups that took millennia to form their relationships.

How do I help?
The easiest way is to attend one of our events. See the events page to see what’s coming up. If you can’t make it to one of those, consider reaching out to us to see how else you might be useful to the park. Some residents regularly pick up trash – others take pics and submit those to iNaturalist. We’re open to ideas – so please share them with us. If you regularly take pics – contact us and we can write a blog about your experience or picture. See Contact Us to get in touch.
