Through posts on Next Door (neighborhood app) and in emails sent to GGHG, we found out about dead fish floating in one of the ponds at the Park. Both notifiers had also sent word to Parks and Rec and ODFW (Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife) of the discovery. Kudos to those who made those connections – these are citizens who CARE about their Park and the creatures within. THANK YOU! We also reached out to our city contacts on this issue.

Some Park goers may be aware that algae blooms later in the year can kill fish, dogs and even people in certain circumstances. That’s why there are signs up around the park notifying residents of these potential issues. THIS IS NOT THAT.

This fish kill is likely tied to natural phenomena associated with spawning. Most of those killed appeared to be large-scale suckers. During the process of spawning, many die naturally either through exhaustion or simply reaching the end of their natural lives. It’s likely that other organisms are already busy converting large-scale suckers into food for their lives. Though it may be weird to think about it – these fish provide a critical, abundant food source for other animals that inhabit the Park. This writer assumes that authorities would leave these animals in place for that reason.

Natural cycles need life and death to complete – and to keep the processes going. Caring about those lost (or gained) is a hallmark of good habitat guardians. Won’t you join our efforts?
